Masterclass 3/3: Systems Leadership (4th September)

Mike Adamson hosted an engaging session on systems leadership and its role in building resilience. The discussion began by exploring the distinctions between simple, complicated, and complex challenges, highlighting why different approaches are needed and the risks of oversimplifying issues in resilience and social purpose work.

Drawing on his experience with the Grenfell Tower response and the creation of the Voluntary and Community Sector Emergencies Partnership, Mike shared how systems leadership has evolved to meet complex societal challenges. He emphasised the importance of trust, humility, and shared purpose in fostering collaboration across organisations.

Participants examined concepts of agency, influence, and value - how individuals and organisations can act beyond their immediate boundaries to drive systemic change. The session concluded with practical insights and next steps, including embedding systems leadership practices through ongoing learning, cross-sector connections, and future opportunities for collaboration.

This webinar reinforced that resilience in today’s world requires more than organisational strength - it demands collective leadership and a whole-system approach.
